It's been forever since I wrote here!
Since the last time I posted, I moved to NJ where I started my first actuarial position. It's been okay, though when there's not much to do, I still think about what sort of art I'd like to do. Recently, I was given a script and I've started developing some art for a comic with a friend, Jason Merrin. He's already directed a feature that just recently screened in Seattle at NFFTY. I'm really excited to work on the book, though I'm afraid progress will be slow, especially with my third actuarial exam coming up in mid July. Jason is super talented and he's always been interested in comics. Though initially he was hoping to do a series, I had to tell him that it was not really plausible given my current career path and study schedule. I'm not going to give away the story, but it is an homage to the 50s space pulp comics. Immediately I jumped into Wally Wood, and Virgil Finlay and tried to study the aesthetic of the time. But at the same time, I want to work in some of the elegance of Alex Raymond's 50s work as well. Here are a few preliminary attempts at designs.

With my last story, the In Cold Blood excerpt, the main objective was to learn something about character business. I knew that the story, even if it was short, only unfolded inside a car. How could I add some interest within this interaction? I ended up using memory flashbacks, and introducing the action of Perry taking aspirin. This offered potential payoff, as I knew Perry could choke on his water when questioned by Dick. It's a subtle thing, but all of the little things add up in storytelling.
