Almost done with pencil roughs for my project. Today, I thought I'd start thinking about cover ideas. Here's a sketch from today, using my Copic Markers. I think I'll go forward this idea, though I would have to redraw this. I'm still not happy with the likeness of the face. And that hand...

Just published a couple more pages from my graphic novel adaptation of Ray Bradbury's short story, All Summer in a Day. I am still excited about it, but it's always hard to finish out a project once the initial fervor wears off. Most of the pencil roughs are nearing completion, but I don't want to share all of the pages until they're further along. I don't want to give everything away, though anyone can find the story online and read it. Maybe I'll publish all of the inks when they're done.
I need to walk a fine line between trying to work loose and fast and also trying to push up my quality at the same time. It's easy to settle for old ways of drawing, and I need to constantly remind myself to hate my drawing more and stop settling. Hopefully I'm making steps, though my work is still far short of what I'd like it to be, both storytelling wise and drawing wise. Find the pencil roughs here! Tell me what you think! I got pretty excited about this new project, and I've worked on it a lot in the last week, putting in sometimes entire days on the pages. I've done bits and pieces of about half of the planned pages (right now I think there's going to be 19).
I'm trying to find new, interesting ways to lay out my pages. See some of the pages here. I realize that if ever I were to pursue further graphic novel creating(or maybe I should do it anyway), I need to learn perspective much better. One point perspective is not always what is called for, and I need to practice cityscapes. Environments are generally my least favorite thing to draw, but I recognize that they do have value in helping transport the viewer more fully into the world of the characters. It's been fun to explore this even for a short time. I needed a little break from boarding, and hopefully I return in the coming weeks as a better visual storyteller. |
